Here are three joyful words for the start of 2020:
Free. Tax. Preparation.
Local taxpayers can now get their tax returns prepared for free with Community Link as part of the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Any household earning $56,000 or less qualifies for the service.
For half a century, VITA has offered free tax preparation assistance to elderly, disabled, and low- and moderate-income households. This program has benefited thousands of lower-income individuals and families. During Community Link’s last fiscal year, they helped more than 10,000 lower-income taxpayers complete and file their tax returns. The average refund per household was $1,348.
VITA volunteers ensure that eligible taxpayers take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the largest and most effective anti-poverty program in the United States today, according to Prosperity Now.
This year, Community Link will offer free tax preparation again in partnership with regional affiliates, including AARP and the IRS, with sites in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, and Gaston counties. Sites will be open through April 15.
