Crisis Assistance Ministry Closes Facilities Due to COVID-19

Effective at close of business March 17, 2020, all Crisis Assistance Ministry facilities are closed until further notice due to the impact of COVID-19.

March 16, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 16, 2020:

In light of recent directives from federal, state, and local agencies related to limiting the spread of COVID-19, Crisis Assistance Ministry will close all its facilities until further notice, effective close of business March 17, 2020.

Families Safe For Now

With utility companies temporarily halting disconnections and NC courts stopping evictions and foreclosures, at-risk families will feel some relief in the short term to ensure they remain stably housed with utilities flowing. Therefore, for the safety of customers, volunteers, and employees the agency’s buildings will close to minimize the community threat.

Help Will Still Be Needed

While the temporary suspension of utility disconnections and evictions offers relief to families right now, the agency anticipates the need for emergency financial assistance may be unprecedented once the threat from COVID-19 has passed.

Bills that are suspended will continue to multiply over time as struggling families continue to feel the economic impact of closures and quarantine measures.  Financial support from the community will be essential to meet those needs in the future.

Financial contributions can be made online anytime at https://www.crisisassistance.org/challenge.

About Crisis Assistance Ministry

Crisis Assistance Ministry helps Mecklenburg County families experiencing poverty with life’s most basic needs:  emergency rent and utility assistance, clothing, household goods, furniture, beds, and appliances. Beyond the crisis, the independent non-profit organization introduces pathways to economic opportunity, empowers families to improve their financial security, and engages the community to create understanding of the complex issues facing neighbors living in poverty. In the most recent fiscal year, more than 20,000 families received some form of assistance from the agency. Visit them online at crisisassistance.org to learn more about preventing homelessness and preserving dignity.

Pssst . . . we've got plenty of room for group and individual #volunteers this summer (and even this fall). These great folks from @wellsfargo helped prepare donated clothing for Free Store shoppers yesterday. Meanwhile, individual volunteers helped get customers connected to emergency financial assistance. You can find the perfect opportunity for you OR your teens by visiting our VOLUNTEER tab on our website. (link in bio)

This volunteer team from @CareRingNC's Nurse Family Partnership brought a burst of energy Friday as they inspected and hung clothes in the warehouse and then helped stock the Free Store. We had a hard time keeping up with them, but with their help the store is now stocked and ready for up to 60 Mecklenburg County families per day to shop free-of-charge thanks to the generosity of our community. And the store looks fabulous, thanks to awesome #volunteers!

Crisis Assistance Ministry is closed today to observe Juneteenth. But the question remains: while Juneteenth commemorates the arrival of legal emancipation for formerly enslaved people, when will we loose the chains of economic disparity and move our community toward a place of equity?
